Looking for Tips on How to Choose a Real Estate Agent?

Published: March 26, 2025

Buying a house is one of the most important financial transactions of your life. When looking for a real estate agent, it's key to do your research to protect yourself and make the process a smooth experience.

Here are some tips to help you find the right agent for you:

  • Use referrals: Talk to friends, neighbors, and people you trust for referrals.
  • Do your research: Once you have a list of agents, use due diligence and research the agent online, looking for any news stories about them, website postings from clients, how long they have been in business, etc.
  • Verify a license on DRE's website: Make sure you always verify an agent's license before hiring them. Do not hire an agent without a license. Visit our public license information tool to get started.
  • Is the license current? Check if the agent's license is current (not Expired, Surrendered, Revoked, or Licensed NBA)? If it is not current, do not hire that person.
  • Ask for references from past clients: References should include clients' names.
  • Find the right fit: Ask for specializations in past transactions; do not hire someone unfamiliar with the area where you want to buy; and consider their communication style - is it important that they explain to you the details of the process?
  • Do they work for a broker? If the agent is a salesperson, make sure they work for a broker. If not, do not hire them.
  • Verify their expertise: Ask for professional affiliations with real estate or mortgage organizations. If the agent claims professional affiliation, verify with the organization. If they claim to be a specialist, expert, or have certification, ask for proof.
  • Better Business Bureau: When possible, look them up on the Better Business Bureau's website. What is their ranking (A-F)? Are there any complaints?

If the information provided by an agent doesn't match your online research, be cautious. If you have further questions, contact DRE. View our brochure for more tips on hiring an agent. For more resources on consumer protection, visit our website.
